A lash lift curls and darkens the lashes you already have, and it needs almost no upkeep for several weeks. Lash extensions are individual fibers glued onto your natural lashes one at a time. They add length and fullness that a lift cannot, but they need a fill every two to three weeks and some daily care. If you want your own lashes to look like you are wearing mascara, a lift fits. If you want lashes longer or thicker than the ones you grow, that is what extensions are for.
One thing up front: Spathetics offers the Lash Lift & Tint and does not do lash extensions. This comparison is here to help you choose well, even if the right answer for you is extensions from a lash technician somewhere else.
What is a lash lift?
A lash lift reshapes your natural lashes. A solution softens them, they are set upward over a small curved shield, and a second solution holds them in that shape. A tint then darkens them, which makes the pale tips visible and the lashes look longer.
The curl lasts several weeks and fades gradually as those lashes shed and new ones grow in. Nothing is attached to your lashes, so there is nothing to fall off or fill.
What are lash extensions?
Extensions are synthetic fibers attached with adhesive to individual natural lashes. They come in different lengths, curls and thicknesses, so the look can range from subtle to dramatic.
Each extension falls out when the natural lash it is attached to sheds. That happens a few lashes at a time, every day, which is why extensions need regular fill appointments to stay even.
How do a lash lift and extensions compare?
- The look. A lift looks like your lashes on a very good mascara day. Extensions can add length and density you do not naturally have.
- Upkeep. A lift is one appointment every several weeks. Extensions mean a longer first appointment and then fills every two to three weeks.
- Daily life. After the first day or two, lifted lashes can get wet, be rubbed gently and take mascara if you want it. Extensions call for oil-free products, careful cleansing, no rubbing, and some thought about how you sleep.
- Cost over time. Because of the fills, extensions cost more over a year than lifts do. Current pricing for the lift is on the service page.
- Your natural lashes. A lift is a chemical process, so it should not be redone too soon. Extensions put some weight on each lash, and picking or pulling at them can break the lash underneath. Both are fine for healthy lashes when they are done properly and cared for.
Who is a lash lift best for?
- Lashes that are a decent length but grow straight out or point downward.
- Anyone who would like to stop using a lash curler and wear less mascara, or none.
- People who swim, work out, or do not want to think about their lashes.
- Anyone who rubs their eyes, including during spring allergy season, when extensions are harder to live with.
- A natural look for everyday life.
The honest limit: a lift works with what you have. Very short or sparse lashes will be curled and darker, but they will not look long or full.
When do extensions make more sense?
- Your natural lashes are short or sparse and length is the thing you want.
- You want a fuller, more dramatic look than your own lashes can give.
- You are willing to keep up with fills and the daily care.
What if you only want fuller lashes for a weekend?
There is a middle option. Lash clusters are small groups of lashes applied to your own for a fuller look, and they last up to 7 days. They suit a single occasion, such as a Valentine’s dinner, a wedding you are attending or a winter trip somewhere warm, without committing to fills.
Some people get a lift for everyday and add clusters only when there is an event. If that is your plan, mention it when you book so the timing of the two works out.
Who should hold off on either one?
Wait if you have an eye infection, irritated or swollen eyelids, or have recently had eye surgery, and ask your eye doctor when it is safe. If your eyes are very sensitive, or you have reacted to hair dye, perm solution or lash adhesive before, talk to your doctor first and tell Ashley before your appointment. If you are pregnant, check with your doctor as well.
How do you take care of a lash lift?
The first day or two matter most: keep your lashes dry and leave them alone while the curl finishes setting. After that, there is very little to do. The details are in the lash lift aftercare guide.
If lower maintenance and your own lashes sound right, the Lash Lift & Tint is the place to start. You can see both lash services and current prices, then book an appointment online when you are ready.
