Start regular facials three to six months before the wedding, try any brow or lash service for the first time at least two months out, and have your last facial about a week before the day. In the final week, do nothing new. Skin needs time to respond to care, and it needs time to recover from anything that does not agree with it.
This timeline is written for brides, but it works just as well for grooms, mothers, the wedding party and anyone else who will be in the photos.
When should you start a skincare routine before your wedding?
Earlier than most people think. Skin renews itself roughly every four to six weeks, so one facial the week of the wedding can only do so much. Several months of steady care is what changes how skin looks and feels.
Six months to three months before
- Book a first facial and settle into a schedule. About once a month suits most people. If you have never had one, the Deluxe Facial is the usual place to start.
- Set a simple routine at home. Cleanser, moisturizer and a daily sunscreen matter more than anything else you could add. Spring sun is stronger than it feels, and outdoor showers, cookouts and engagement photos add up.
- See a dermatologist now for anything medical. Cystic acne, a persistent rash or a prescription you are considering all need time. An esthetician cannot treat those, and a new prescription can take months to show results.
- Think beyond the face. If your dress has an open back, breakouts there need the same lead time. The Back Facial reaches skin you cannot easily care for yourself.
Two to three months before
This is the time for trial runs. Anything you have never had done should happen now, when a result you do not love has time to grow out and a reaction has time to calm down.
- Brows. Try a wax, tint or lamination and see how you like the shape and the shade. Then stop tweezing between visits, so there is something to work with before the wedding.
- Lashes. A Lash Lift & Tint curls and darkens your own lashes for several weeks. A trial now tells you whether you want it for the wedding and the honeymoon.
- Waxing. If you plan to have your lip, chin or anything else waxed for the day, have a first wax now. Skin tends to react most the first time.
- New products. If you want to add a serum or change your moisturizer, do it now and add one thing at a time.
One month before
From here on, the goal is to keep things steady. Have your regular facial, keep the routine you already have, and do not start any new product. Many breakouts and reactions that show up in wedding week trace back to something new that was tried in a hurry.
Tell your esthetician the date. It changes what makes sense at each visit.
One to two weeks before
- Your last facial, about a week out. That gives any pinkness from extractions time to settle, and skin tends to look its best several days after a facial, not the same afternoon.
- Brow lamination, if you are having one. A week or more ahead lets the bold first few days soften.
- Lash lift and tint. Around a week ahead works well. It will easily last through the wedding and the trip after.
The final week
- Brow wax and tint, three to five days before. Any redness from the wax is gone by the day, and the tint is still fresh.
- Facial waxing in the same window. Not the day before. Makeup does not sit well on freshly waxed skin.
- No new products, no at-home peels and no picking. If a blemish appears, leave it alone. A makeup artist can cover a flat spot far more easily than a scab.
- Sleep, water and sunscreen. A sunburn or a strap line a few days before the wedding is hard to hide.
What if the wedding is only a few weeks away?
You still have options. Skip anything you have not tried before, and keep to services with predictable results: a gentle facial about a week ahead, and a brow wax a few days before. A short facial with no extractions is the safer choice when time is tight. Be upfront about the date when you book.
If you are on a prescription retinoid or acne medication, or you are pregnant, check with your doctor before any facial or wax, and mention it when you book.
