For prom, start on your skin four to six weeks ahead, get your brows and lashes done in the final week, and do not try anything new in the last few days. Skin needs time to respond, and anything that can leave redness needs time to calm down. Here is a simple timeline you can count back from your prom date, whether it is in Effingham, Teutopolis, Altamont or another town nearby.
Four to six weeks before prom
This is when skin work pays off, because skin takes about a month to renew itself.
- Settle on a simple routine. A gentle cleanser morning and night, a moisturizer, and sunscreen in the morning. That is enough. A basic routine done every day beats five new products started in a panic.
- Have a first facial, if you want one. The Express Facial is a short appointment with a cleanse, gentle exfoliation and a mask or treatment chosen for your skin that day. It is a good first facial, and going this early shows you how your skin reacts.
- Try brow or lash services now if they are new to you. If you have never had a brow tint, a wax or a lash lift, prom week should not be the first time. A trial run tells you whether you like the look and how your skin handles it.
If you are dealing with painful or persistent acne, see a dermatologist. Earlier is better, since most treatments take weeks to show results.
One to two weeks before
If you are getting a facial before prom, this is the window: about a week ahead, and no closer than five days. Extractions can leave skin a little pink, and some people get a few small blemishes afterward. A week gives all of that time to pass. The reasoning is explained in when to book a facial before a big event.
This is also the time to stop experimenting. If a friend recommends a new mask or a peel, save it for after prom.
Three to seven days before
Brows
Get your brows waxed and tinted a few days ahead. Waxing can leave the skin pink for a few hours, sometimes a day, and a tint looks its boldest at first and softens slightly. Three to five days before prom, your brows are still crisp and your skin has settled. A Brow Tint & Wax covers shape and color in one visit.
Lashes
A Lash Lift & Tint curls your own lashes upward and darkens them, so they look like you are wearing mascara when you are not. It lasts for several weeks, so anytime in the final week works. Leave at least two full days before prom, because lashes need to stay dry and untouched while the curl sets. The lash lift aftercare guide explains what to avoid.
A lift is also a practical choice for prom night. There is less mascara to smudge by the last dance.
One or two days before
If you want fuller lashes for the night, this is when lash clusters go on. They are small groups of lashes applied to your own, and they last up to 7 days, so a day or two ahead keeps them fresh for photos and for the weekend after.
Otherwise, keep things quiet:
- Wash your face, moisturize, and go to bed at a reasonable hour.
- Drink water.
- Keep your hands off your face.
What if you break out the week of prom?
It happens, and stress and short sleep do not help. Do not squeeze it. A flat spot covers easily with concealer. A picked spot turns into a scab, which does not.
Use a spot treatment you have already used before, and leave it alone. Do not put anything new or harsh on it at this point.
What should you avoid before prom?
- Sunburn. The first warm days of April make it tempting to sit outside for hours. Burned or peeling skin cannot be waxed, and it does not photograph well. Wear sunscreen.
- Waxing after a spray tan. Wax can lift the color. If you are getting a spray tan, do any waxing first, at least a day or two before.
- Waxing while on certain acne medications. If you take isotretinoin (Accutane) or use a prescription retinoid, waxing may not be safe for your skin. Tell Ashley before you book, and check with your dermatologist.
- New products in the final week. A reaction takes days to clear.
- Doing your own brows the night before. Over-plucking is hard to undo by the next day.
The short version
- Four to six weeks out: simple routine, first facial, trial run of anything new.
- About one week out: facial, if you are having one.
- Three to five days out: brows.
- Two or more days out: lash lift and tint.
- One or two days out: lash clusters, if you want them.
- Final days: nothing new, sunscreen, sleep.
You do not need every step. Pick the one or two things that matter most to you and put them on the calendar. Ashley is the only person at Spathetics, so there are only so many openings in any one week. Once you know your prom date, you can book online and count back from there.
